This project seeks to reconstruct the histories for descendants of Carl (= Karl) and Veronica (née Modrzejewska) Schwertfeger, who took on the surname "Schwert" upon their emigration to the United States.
Church records confirm that the family originated in the region of Sobbowitz, about 40 km south of Danzig, West Prussia. After World War II, West Prussia became part of northern Poland. Sobbowtiz is now Sobowidz, and Danzig is now Gdańsk.
Some documentation for Veronica, including the death certificate of her daughter Rosalia and Veronica's own death certificate suggests that Veronica's children were uncertain of their mother's surname. However, church records of Gardschau and of Kladau, West Prussia confirm that Veronica's surname was "Modrzejewska."

Franz Carl, Johann, Franciska, Friedrich, Maria, Joseph, and Rosalie Schwertfeger (children of Carl and Veronica) emigrated to the United States. Franz Carl, Johann, Franciska, and Friedrich apparently arrived between the years 1878 to 1882. In 1887, Carl and Veronica emigrated with Maria, Joseph, and Rosalia. All of the family settled in the industrial city of Buffalo in western New York State, and all shortened their surname to "Schwert."
